Introduction to Japanese stab binding notebooks

Meet the Maker

Stab bound books is the passion of Caroline Aldersey.

"I started making handbound books as a hobby after some local tuition. I soon

found I had a flair for Japanese Stab Binding and I have concentrated on this type of binding over the past year"

"I now have a range of handcrafted A5 hardback notebooks many of which combine Cockerell Marbled Paper with the Japanese Stab Binding method."

"Each handbound notebook contains plain white paper (120gm)  with either a block coloured end paper to match the marbled cover or a marbled endpaper identical to the outer cover where a Cockerell Marbled Paper has been used"

"I am fortunate to have access to the remaining Cockerell Marbled Papers.

Cockerell Marbled Papers are no longer in production so by purchasing one of my notebooks you will have the unique opportunity to own a piece of history!"

Japanese Stab Binding

The beauty of the Stab Binding method is that the rear of the notebook is a mirror image of the front.

Cockerell Marbled Paper

The marbled papers used in the creation of many of my notebooks, were produced by the World Famous Cockerell Marbled Paper company based in Grantchester, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom.

Below is a link to a short film describing the process.
